Introduction

“Cherry eye” is the common term for a prolapsed gland of the third eyelid. It appears as a red, fleshy mass in the corner of a dog’s eye. While not always a dire emergency, it can lead to chronic dry eye and infections if left untreated.

Symptoms

• A red or pink “blob” in the inner corner of the eye.
• Excessive squinting or pawing at the eye.
• Clear or thick discharge.
• Redness of the conjunctiva.

Surgical Costs

Modern vets recommend “tucking” or anchoring the gland rather than removing it, as removal leads to permanent dry eye (KCS).
